Tribal Emergency Alert System via RSS/XML Feed:
Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is a family of web formats used to publish frequently updated digital content. Most commonly used to update news RSS News Reader Graphic (Actual)articles and other content that changes quickly, RSS feeds may also include audio files (PodCasts) or even video files (VodCasts). Users of RSS content use programs called feed 'readers' of 'aggregator' (newer versions of Web browsers offer built in support for RSS feeds): the user 'subscribes' to a feed by entering the link of the RSS feed into their RSS feed reader; the RSS feed reader then checks the subscribed feeds to see if any have new content since the last time it checked, and if so, retrieves the new content and present it to the user.

The OEM's E.A.S. via RSS Program is a newly instituted program to communicate to tribal citizens:

  • - That there is an emergency or potential emergency situation unfolding on or near tribal lands that either will effect, of has the potential to detrimentally effect the Nation's Citizenry, Tribal Lands, and/or Tribal Infrastructure.
  • - Where to get detailed information regarding the emergency or pending emergency situation.
  • - Where to find suggested actions to take.
  • - Where to find out where and if assistance is available to local Tribal Citizens.

The OEM's E.A.S. via RSS Program is not designed to be a cure-all for the need to stay informed.  It may well occur that a hazard, disaster, emergency or valid safety concerns could prevent the OEM Staff's use of, or access to computers to send out emergency e-mail alerts or to update the OEM's RSS/XML Feed.  Therefore, individual Citizens have a responsibility to themselves and to their respective family members to stay informed of their surrounding environment.  The Western Cherokee Nation's Office of Emergency Management is constantly trying to improve it's imformation dissemination abilties.  Any suggestions regarding the OEM's RSS/XML Feed are appreciated.  Please email OEM with any coments or suggestions.

This RSS feed is updated as necessary, but approximately every thirty-six hours at the most infrequent.  The feed it's self is set to allow refresh every five minutes, however, your news reader my not support such short interval refresh rates, and, it may take an hour or more for this feed to update.  Below is the current RSS feed for OEM, i.e., this information is what would be displayed in your aggregator (news reader) or browser right now:
